sister mary, who is gay, publicly sparred over same-sex marriage. it peeked when she posted on facebook, liz's position is to treat mooi family as second class citizens. this isn't a discussion over grazing fees or what to do over iran. dick cheney came to liz's defense. it did little to diffuse the situation. liz cheney has trailed in public polling and saw veteran republican lawmakers flock to encouple bent mike enzi's chamber. cheney could leave as early as this week. also later today in congress, the senate will vote on a three month extension of unemployment benefits for more than 1 million americans. democrats believe they have the votes to advance the bill but house republicans argue the costs should be offset with spending cuts.

senators rand paul and chuck schumer talked about their points. >> i'm not opposed to unemployment insurance. i am opposed to how to pay for it. what i've always said is it needs to be paid for but we also need to do something for long-term unemployed people. we need to create something new that would create jobs. >> the tectonic plates of our politics have changed. for the first five years of the obama administration the two issues that dominated were health care and budget deficit. this year dealing with declining middle class incomes and not enough job growth will be the none one issue. and if on the first day of the new session the republican party says they won't even support unemployment benefit extension, the original round was started by george butch when unemployment was 5.6%, they're going to show themselves so far out of the main street that it will hurt them. >> let's head overseas where there are growing concerns about

stability in iraq after extremists took control of two key cities. iraqi officials said they were able to take back parts of ramadi. the progress was made after heavy fighting of iraq's military and the unimilitants. it's a different story in the city of fallujah. they've joined forces with the al qaeda linked militants. secretary of state john kerry says the militants are, quote, the most dangerous players in the region. >> this is a fight that belongs to the iraqis. that is exactly what the president and the world decided some time ago when we left iraq. we're not contemplating returning and putting boots on rnt ground, this is their fight. >> iran also says it will offer support if iraqi authorities ask for it. >> the united states says they belong behind bars. afghanistan is moving ahead with

plans to free dozens of detainees, some of whom the u.s. says were directly involved in killing american and nato forces. a review board has signed off on the release of 88 prisoners from bagram air force base. afghanistan first control of the prison in march despite u.s. concerns that the detainees would be freed. afghan president hamid karzai has yet to sign the long-term security agreement with the u.s. ahead of plans to withdraw by the end of 2014. back here at home investigators are now trying to figure out what caused deadly plane crash yesterday afternoon in aspen, colorado. en route from mexico, the plane crashed while trying to land and it flipped upside down and quickly went up in flames. one person was killed, two hurt, one seriously. pope francis heading to the holy glounld. he announced yesterday he will head to israel, jordan in may.

he will become the fourth pontiff to visit that region. the vatican is rejecting the thought that he will accept same-sex marriage for couples. he was quoted as saying on an educational level gay unions raise challenges for us today which for us are sometimes difficult to understand. i remember a case though where a sat little girl said my mother's friend doesn't love me. the vatican said pope francis's words were manipulated. let's turn to the debate over the nsa. rand paul will file a class action lawsuit against the obama administration over the agency's spy program. paul is questioning the right to collect data for millions of americans from one single warrant. congressman peter king

disagrees. >> rand paul does not know what he's talking about. rand paul is spreading fear among the american people. to me either he's totally uninformed or he's part of that hate america crowd that i thought left us in the 1960s. in any event, he doesn't deserve to be in the united states from spreading that misperception and absolute lies. >> it bothers me that as we look at rand paul, americans could die. the azzazi attempted subway attack in 2009 was stopped primarily by the nsa. if rand paul had been around, hundreds of new yorkers would be around today. >> there are also growing calls for edward snowden to be granted clemency for his role to be leaking confidential materials. janet napolitano does not believe that should happen saying there needs to be balance between privacy and security but that snowden, quote, went off on

his own and damaged the u.s. in the process. we're two years from the presidential race but outside hillary clinton backers are coalescing around her bid. maggie habram describes a campaign in waiting. on one side a dozen clinton staffers and loyalists. on the other, super pacs and outside groups positioning for clinton's blessing. there was growing concern over the emerge gents of help from the -- at clinton's direction the groups have begun to make a little bit of peace. now priorities u.s.a. which backed president obama will handle megadonors. they'll focus on an e-mail database.
